Learn More About Cogmed Memory Training
Cogmed Working Memory Training (CWMT) is a home-based program specifically created for children, adolescents, and adults with working memory and attention deficits. It was designed by professional game developers working with psychologists and medical researchers. CWMT is a comprehensive multiple-week program which features a series of tasks designed to measurably improve working memory through sustained mental exercises.
CWMT is the most effective and well researched digital intervention to improve working memory. There is a strong connection between attention and working memory and by improving working memory, attention in everyday life is also improved.

Working Memory can be defined as the ability to actively retain information for a short period of time and be able to use this information in our thinking. Some examples of using working memory are:
· Starting and finishing tasks
· Remembering instructions
· Staying focusedDeficits in working memory are linked with inattention, one of the most common symptoms encountered in psychological evaluations. Inattention can manifest as an inability to focus, to keep instructions in mind, plan ahead, focus on the content while reading and keep on task at school or work. Inattention impairs the ability to learn and focus and can lead to struggles academically or occupationally. Symptoms of inattention are often present in ADHD, learning issues and other neurodevelopmental disorders as well as after strokes and traumatic head injuries.
Through sustained mental exercises provided by CWMT, working memory capacity can be increased.

CWMT is a computerized at home training program which includes consistent training over time. In order to boost motivation and ensure compliance and high quality, the training is supported by a coach who monitors the training progress online, and makes regular check-ins.
Training is available in two programs: Standard and Light. The Standard version requires comfort with numbers and letters, while the Light version does not and may be more appropriate for young children and those with specific cognitive difficulties that interfere with language processing. Information about the training includes:
· Training is supported by a coach who maintains close contact with the trainee and family.
·Training blocks vary in length of time (25, 35, or 50 minutes) and how often Trainees should train (3 - 5 days / week), which impacts the overall length of time to complete the Cogmed training. Configuring these parameters allows the training to be individualized to the needs of the Trainee.
· The level of difficulty adjusts according to the performance of the participant.
· An optional incentive program is integrated into the training.
· Flexible scheduling for busy adults and families

Cogmed is a method based on the principles of neuroplasticity, specifically targeting the fronto-parietal networks for attention and working memory, as reported in high-impact, scientific journals. The enhancement of attention has been demonstrated in several randomized, controlled studies, by independent research groups. These studies show clinically meaningful, long lasting effects using standardized rating scales. The effect on attention and working memory is larger than the cognitive improvement from pharmacological ADHD-treatments and improves cognition more than cardiovascular fitness training does.
CWMT provides measurable effects. Eight out of ten who complete the program have shown significant improvement in working memory and attention. Effects have been shown to be long-lasting:
· Improved ability to sustain attention
· Improved impulse control
· Better complex reasoning skills
· Better Academic performance
Parents and teachers report other tangible benefits:
· Improved social skills
· Increased initiative
· Increased ability to complete homework more independently

Learn More About Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a 15 hour intervention designed to calm the emotional and physiological states of the trainee by reducing stress and auditory sensitivity, enhancing social engagement and resilience. The intervention uses prosodic vocal music that has been filtered to train the middle ear muscles to focus in on the frequency envelope of human speech. SSP training can boost or accelerate other therapies such as counseling, occupational therapy, speech therapy as well as improving behavioral regulation.
-
SSP is proven to benefit individuals (children, adults and even pets) with challenges or symptoms of: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome, Auditory Sensitivities, Anxiety & Depression, Stress & Trauma, Addictions, Sleep-related problems, Poor Behavior & Self-Regulation, Poor Sensory Integration & Motor Coordination, Poor Social & Emotional Function, Poor Attention & Executive Function and Poor Performance (school, work, play).
-
SSP is not intended to be a substitute for consultation with your healthcare provider, other interventions such as psychotherapy and/or prescribed medication.
SSP can be done at home with a trusted person or with a trusted provider.
SSP training results may vary. Effects or results in the individual can never be guaranteed.
Cost: SSP is not covered by insurance. Training cost is $450.
If you are interested in being evaluated for you or your child’s appropriateness for SSP, please use our contact form, call 630-325-5300 or email.
If it is determined that you or your child would benefit from the SSP training, our SSP coach will be in contact to set up a start up session for the training. This can be done in the office or via telehealth. The first appointment should last 45 minutes or less, during which we will set up your training, go over the frequency of your training, and establish a follow up schedule. If you would prefer to meet in-person, that can be arranged.
